It’s no secret that Chicago summers make the city a warm and sunny oasis after bearing another chilly Midwestern winter. One of the main reasons why warm weather in the city is so famed? Dining (and drinking) al fresco. Chicago is home to some of the best rooftop and patio locations around, and you’ll want to take advantage of as many of them as possible. We’ll take the guesswork out of your outdoor dining experience as we list of a few of our favorite spots to sip a cold one under a sunny (or starry) sky:

The Terrace at Trump (401 N. Wabash)
Just a few blocks north of Lakeshore East you’ll find “The Donald’s” Windy City skyscraper, complete with an unbelievable 16th floor terrace. Positioned smack in the middle of Chicago’s bustling center, Trump offers guests gorgeous Lake Michigan and Chicago River views. The Terrace is even a perfect viewing spot for fireworks on Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the summer. If you’re more into the food than you are feasting your eyes on the skyline, rest assured the Trump’s fresh and seasonal menu won’t disappoint. The Terrace is scheduled to open May 16th.

ROOF on theWIT (201 N. State)
Located in The Loop on the 27th floor of theWit hotel, you’ll find a 7,000ft rooftop lounge, recently named one of the top ten rooftop bars in the country by USAToday. This city hotspot has everything from fire pits to telescopes, live music and more. Cocktail lovers will go crazy for ROOF’s beverage menu, which includes signature mixed drinks like “Sex on the Roof” and “Sabado Gigante.” Best of all? The patio has heaters and enclosed spaces so it stays open all year round.

Vertigo Sky Lounge at Dana Hotel (2 W. Erie)
On the 26th floor of the Dana Hotel and Spa sits Vertigo Sky Lounge, which the Nightclub Bar Awards ranked in their top three rooftop destinations. Vertigo features nightly live DJs, a deluxe outdoor fire-pit, plush couches, and unbeatable city views. If you’re looking for a rooftop to host your friends for a swanky soiree, Vertigo is great for special events.

Your Own Rooftop
Want to be a homebody and enjoy your own patio’s views? If you’re living in Lakeshore East, you can certainly soak in a beautiful view of the cityscape from your own outdoor space. Fire up the grill; you can’t go wrong grilling up some faux-met homemade burgers, using this drool-worthy recipe. If you want to go the vegetarian route, this black bean recipe will satisfy your grilled food craving. Don’t forget to serve up a side of these crispy sweet potato fries. And of course, no rooftop meal is complete without a cocktail: we recommend wetting your whistle with this summery sangria.

It’s that time of the year when we pay homage the women who raised us, dealt with diaper changes, midnight stomach aches, packing school lunches, and shuffling us to and from football/violin/cheerleading practice: our mothers. Whether your idea of the perfect gift is a day of pampering at her favorite spa, or maybe just spending quality family time together, this city presents a variety of different choices. Chicago hosts a variety of Mother’s Day-themed brunches, events, and specials, giving you plenty of options for spending an afternoon (or weekend!) spoiling mom. Here are some of our picks for celebrating the perfect Mother’s Day in Chicago:

Mother’s Day Cruise
Show mom how special she is by spending a day sipping mimosas, dining on a delicious buffet, listening to live music, and taking in the beautiful city skyline on this afternoon-long yacht cruise. There’s nothing like an afternoon spent cruising Lake Michigan, just enjoying the company and the views. Learn more here.

Brunch in the City
If mom would rather spend the day on land, there are tons of options to start the day with Chicago’s favorite meal: brunch. If you prefer to stay around Lakeshore East, take a look at restaurants like Eggy’s, an urban family diner, or III Forks, home to some of the city’s best steak and seafood. Venture just a few blocks away and there are options like River North’s Hub 51, or the Gold Coast’s Allium. No matter your craving, you’re sure to find it at one of the city’s many brunch hotspots.

Wining and Dining
Get outta town… and celebrate Mother’s Day at Maple Park’s Acquaviva Winery. Take a daytrip out to the country and take in Acquaviva’s lush 40-acre estate and winemaking facility. Cap off your afternoon with a gourmet dinner, including a complimentary slice of double chocolate cake, just for mom. Acquaviva’s Facebook page has all the details.

A Tasty Tour
If chocolate and flowers sounds right up mom’s alley, she’ll love spending the day taking the “Mother’s Day Chocolate and Flowers Tour.” All mothers will receive a flower at the start of the tour, which visits sweet spots along Michigan Avenue like Hendrickx Belgian Bread Crafters and Candyality. Learn more at Chicago Chocolate Tours’ website.

Motherhood: The Musical
If your mom is the musical-loving type, she’ll adore this theatrical tribute that covers mom-centric topics like the post-baby body, minivan-driving, becoming a grandma, and everything in between. This show promises to keep the entire family entertained, and if that’s not enough, every audience member will receive a free Dunkin Donut at the show. For more information, visit this website.

From cruises to wineries, chocolates to show tunes, these are just a few of Chicago’s many events dedicated to celebrating mom. What are your plans for Mother’s Day weekend?

April showers bring May flowers, concerts, farmers markets, and more. Everyone knows that summers in Chicago make the often-brutal winters worth the wait. Luckily we escaped this winter season relatively unscathed (knock on wood), and are eagerly anticipating the best that spring and summer in the city has to offer! Located in the epicenter of the city, Lakeshore East is a great place to live for anyone who wants convenient access to the Chicago’s noteworthy attractions. With that in mind, here are the events we’re most looking forward to this month:

NBA Playoffs
May 1 at 7:00pm (United Center, 1901 W. Madison Street)
The Bulls have officially clenched the #1 seed for the Eastern Conference, and with the Blackhawks down and out of the Stanley Cup runnings, Chicagoans are hungry for an NBA title. After last season’s bitter loss to the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals, Derrick Rose and the rest of the Bulls are back with a vengeance. The Bulls are poised to take on the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the playoffs. Check out this site for the most up-to-date information about the playoffs.

Eric Church
May 11 at 7:30pm (Sears Centre, 5333 Prairie Stone Parkway, Hoffman Estates)
Country crooner Eric Church comes to the Sears Centre, the Windy City stop for his “Blood, Sweat, and Beers Tour.” The fun starts even before the concert does, with the Eric Church Block Party in the Sear Centre’s parking lot, which will feature grilled food, a 200 ft. zipline over the parking lot, music, and more. The concert will include opening acts Brantley Gilbert and Blackberry Smoke, and of course plenty of fan-favorite songs that earned Church recognition for being one of Rolling Stones’ best albums of 2011.

NATO Summit
May 20-21
Chicago has earned the honor of hosting this year’s NATO summit, a diplomatic forum bringing together thousands of international dignitaries to discuss the most pressing issues facing the world. Chicago earns the distinction of being the first US city aside from Washington DC to host the summit, as well as being the largest city to host the summit in almost a decade. While the summit itself isn’t open to the public, NATO and the City of Chicago are hosting a number of events open to the public. Many of Chicago’s restaurants are also celebrating the summit by offering globally inspired tasting menus, desserts, and cocktails. To learn more about public NATO-related events throughout the month, head to this website.

Farmers’ Markets
Weekly, Starting May 22 (Federal Plaza) and May 24 (Daley Plaza)
One of the best parts about living in the city is not having to give up fresh farm-to-table produce, thanks to the rise in popularity of farmers’ markets. This month marks the start of “farmers’ market season” in Chicago, with the beginning of downtown’s two biggest markets at Federal Plaza and Daley Plaza. Patrons can look forward to a wide variety of fresh staples like fruits, vegetables, meats, baked goods, flowers, and more.

Chicago Craft Beer Week
May 17-27 (various locations)
Chicago celebrates its 3rd annual beer week, with the festivities encompassing this year’s theme “Chicago: A City of Neighborhoods.” Chicago’s celebration is a part of the larger American Craft Beer Week, which is in its sixth year and includes events in all 50 states. Chicago beer enthusiasts are invited to participate in this year’s beer week by picking up a lanyard and map from a host venue, and filling the map with stickers collected at participating venues (there are over 200 city-wide). The 11-day celebration will also feature $4 craft beer specials at all participating locations, and a closing party at Revolution Brewing’s production facility. For more information visit CCBW’s website. Cheers!

With warmer weather approaching, Chicagoans are looking forward to the city’s summer festival season. Visiting Chicago’s festivals presents plenty of opportunities to take advantage of the weather, city, culture, and food. One of the best parts about living in Lakeshore East is the close proximity to festival hotspots like Millennium Park and Grant Park. Since you’ll be so close to the center of the city’s action, why not take part in Chicago’s street scene with a festival or two? Here are our picks for the city’s best festivals each month:

MAY

5/4-5/6 – Cinco de Mayo Festival (Douglas Park, 1401 S. Sacramento Drive)
The food, art, and margaritas make this Mexican fiesta a great way to kick off the summer festival season.

5/27 – Bike the Drive (Grant Park)

JUNE

6/8-6/10 – Chicago Blues Festival (Grant Park)

6/29-7/1 – Craft Beer Festival (St. Michael in Old Town, 1633 N. Cleveland Avenue)
Choose from over 50 brews while you take spend your weekend enjoying live music, arts, and crafts at this newcomer to the festival scene.

JULY

7/11-7/15 – Taste of Chicago (Grant Park)
No list of festivals would be complete without the Windy City’s signature event, Taste of Chicago. This year’s five-day festival will include cuisine from top restaurants around the city, a 5K run/2-mile walk, and musical headliners like Jennifer Hudson.

AUGUST

8/3-8/5 – Lollapalooza (Grant Park)
Three days of non-stop music, jam-packed with headliners like Black Sabbath, Florence + The Machine, The Black Keys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and dozens more. If you love the music, but don’t enjoy the festival scene, VIP tickets will get you access to an air-conditioned oasis featuring food, drinks, and premium stage views.

8/18-8/19 – Chicago Air and Water Show (North Avenue Beach)
Even if you don’t venture to North Avenue Beach, you’ll still be able to catch views of mind-boggling airplane stunts as pilots weave in and out of the city’s skyline. For the best views of the water portion, hit the beach early, as this free show tends to draw thousands of tourists.

Spring has officially sprung, and nothing is more telling of that than Lakeshore East’s blossoming restaurant scene. Chicago’s ever-growing restaurant list includes everything from cupcakeries, to bahn mi subs, to Top Chef-owned venues, and food trucks galore… but we’re particularly excited about the new restaurant additions around Lakeshore East. Here’s what resident foodies can look forward to:

The menu also offers a smattering of other appetizers, sized either individually or to share, such as grilled skirt steak (with aged sherry vinegar and spring radish), sautéed calamari, and asiago gnocchi (smoked chicken, pine nuts, and truffle sauce).

Maison
Location: 333 E. Benton Place
Opens: May 16th
Owners: Peter Drohomyrecky and Sue Kim-Drohomyrecky
Maison – French for house, or home—will feature a French countryside-style dining room, and a menu filled with French favorites. Executive Chef Perry Hendrix brings to life a menu containing dishes like caramelized onion soup, braised beef ribs (with potato puree, braised greens, and a red wine sauce), and duck confit (served aside a turnip gratin and lavender honey). Brunch-lovers take note, the restaurant will start featuring a brunch menu in June. Additional information is available on Maison’s website.

Spring has officially arrived in Chicago, even if we’re missing the 80° temperatures we were spoiled with in March. Now that there’s no snow on the ground, Chicagoans are relishing the opportunity to explore the city’s array of springtime events. At a loss for what to do with your free time? We’ve rounded up our top five things to do around Lakeshore East (and beyond!) this month:

NHL Playoffs
Begins April 11
The Chicago Blackhawks have officially clenched their playoff spot, so hockey-lovers have a lot to look forward to this postseason. The 6th seeded Blackhawks are slated to play against the 3rd seeded Phoenix Coyotes in the first round of the playoffs. This will be the 4th straight playoff appearance for Chicago, and they have a lot to prove after losing in the first round last year to the Vancouver Canucks. Fans can check out this site for post-season information. Go ‘Hawks!

Chicago International Movies & Music Festival
April 12-15 (Multiple venues)
Chicago arts fans rejoice as CIMMfest presents the fourth annual four-day showcase of concerts, Q&A’s, films, live score performances, and much more. The film lineup includes documentaries such as Fluchkes, a lighthearted look at Yiddish women growing older, and I Want My Name Back, which tells the story of how management robbed Sugarhill Gang of their money and their name. The festival will feature performances by Kids These Days, and native Chicagoan Nora O’Connor, among others. Visit CIMMfest’s website for the full festival lineup and ticket information.

Counting Crows
April 22 at 7:30pm (Riviera Theater, 4746 N. Racine)
Since 1991 the Counting Crows have been cranking out hits like “Colorblind” and “Hanginaround.” The Counting Crows earned an Academy Award nomination for Accidentally in Love (Shrek 2), and in the past 20 years, the band has sold more than 20 million albums. Their performance takes place in Chicago’s historic Uptown Theater District, just a cab ride away from Lakeshore East.

Chicago Improv Festival
This year’s festival includes over 75 acts, from five countries, performing in 10 venues. Improv fans will be treated to acts like Danger Snack (Los Angeles), Russian Komedi (Chicago/Moscow), Mayor Karen (Philadelphia), and Awkward (Kansas). If you’re looking for a night of laughs, check out the CIF website for performance and ticketing information.

Millennium Park
Anytime
You’d never know from looking at it, but Millennium Park is built on what used to be an industrial wasteland. Now, the 24.5 acre park is beautiful urban oasis located just steps away from Lakeshore East. Millennium Park is home to the famous “Bean” (actually titled “Cloud Gate”), The Lurie Garden, The Great Lawn, and Crown Fountain. While the park will host dozens of events come summertime, we can’t think of a better way to welcome spring than simply taking a stroll in the park and soaking up some fresh air and sunshine.

When discussing baseball in Chicago, it’s a tale of two cities. When Chicagoans “root, root, root for the home team,” they have to choose where their loyalty lies. On the North Side are the Cubs fans, hell-bent on the belief that this year will be the year to break the 103-year World Series drought that’s plagued the team. A stark comparison to the South Side fans, who take pride in supporting the 2005 World Series winners, the White Sox.

Residents of Lakeshore East are lucky to live right between the two baseball territories. Whether residents want to head south to U.S. Cellular field, or north to revel in the history of Wrigley, the decision is theirs to make. If you’re new to the city and deciding which team to lay claim to, here’s a rundown of each team’s highlights:

Chicago Cubs
League/Division: National League, Central Division
Stomping Grounds: Wrigley Field (Wrigleyville/Lakeview neighborhood)
Founded: 1903 as one of the charter franchises for the National League
Fans Wear: Red, white, and blue… and anything with that cute little bear on it
Hall-of-Famers: Ferguson Jenkins (P), Billy Williams (OF), Ernie Banks (SS), Ron Santo (3B)
Claims to fame:
-Back-to-back division titles in 2007-2008
-Team earned 10,000th win in April 2008
-Pitcher Kerry Wood holds the Major League record for most strikeouts in consecutive starts (33)
World Series Appearances: Ten. The Cubs faced the Detroit Tigers in the 1907 and 1908 World Series, and won both. They haven’t won a World Series since.

Chicago White Sox
League/Division: American League, Central Division
Stomping Grounds: U.S. Cellular Field (Armour Square neighborhood)
Founded: 1900 as one of the American League’s eight charter franchises
Fans Wear: Black, white, and silver
Hall-of-Famers: Frank Thomas (1B/DH), Carlton Fisk (C), Luis Aparicio (SS), Nellie Fox (2B)
Claims to fame:
-The White Sox hold the American League record for most runs hit in a single game (29 versus Kansas City in 1955)
-Jim Thome hit his 500th homerun as a member of the White Sox in 2007
-Sox hold the American League record for length of game (25 innings versus Milwaukee in 1984)
World Series Appearances: Five. In 2005 the Sox defeated the Houston Astros to take home their first World Series title in 88 years.

Whether you choose to rally behind the Cubs with their endearing fight song, or you’re brimming with South side pride, you’ll love enjoying baseball season in the Windy City. Break out the crackerjacks, Chicago, it’s time to play ball!

Spring weather has crept up on Chicago, and now is the perfect time to transition from trotting on the treadmill to jogging outdoors. Whether you’re a novice or a pro, signing up for a race is a great motivator for all runners. Looking for the perfect race to run this spring? Magellan Development has teamed up with Life Time Fitness to host the Chicago Spring Half Marathon and 10K on May 12, 2012.

Participants in this year’s race can choose from either the 10K (6.2 mile) distance, or the half marathon (13.1 miles). Both races begin just steps from Chicago’s Lake Michigan waterfront, and will happen on a scenic out-and-back style course past the city’s history museum campus and Soldier Field. Runners will cross the finish line in The Park at Lakeshore East, where a post-race picnic and celebration will also be held.

Runners can register for the race online here, and the cost is $60 for the half marathon or $45 for the 10K. Participants are also invited to make a donation to the Northwestern Brain Tumor Institute, the official charity for this year’s race.

Want more info to register? Check out the Chicago Spring Half Marathon and 10K’s official website.

With spring on the way, March presents a slew of exciting happenings around downtown Chicago. Whether you’re new to the area or a born and bred Chicagoan, we’ve rounded up the top 5 events you HAVE to check out this month:

Lady Antebellum (Allstate Arena, 6920 N. Mannheim Rd.)
March 9 at 7pm, tickets $29.50-$79.50
Even casual country music-listeners recognize Lady Antebellum’s 2009 chart-topper, “Need You Now.” The trio’s pop-country sound has landed them in the winners’ circle at numerous awards shows in recent years including Top New Duo or Group and New Artist of the Year (Country Music Association), and Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group and Song of the Year (Grammy Awards). The group’s most recent album, “Own the Night,” also picked up a Grammy for Country Album of the Year at this year’s big show. Don’t miss the opportunity to check out Lady Antebellum for yourself this month!

St. Patrick’s Day (Downtown)
March 17, free
Hold onto your corned beef sandwich and green top hat! St. Patrick’s Day is hands down one of Chicago’s favorite holidays of the year. Start off your top ‘o the morning by watching as the river is dyed green at 10am. Insiders say the best view is from the East side of the Michigan Ave. bridge, just a few blocks from Lakeshore East. Afterwards, stop in one of Chicago’s many Irish bars for a green beer and then stake out your spot for the 57th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade at Columbus & Balboa. Want to continue the festivities ‘til the sun goes down? Bars all over the city offer specials that will keep you river dancing all night long.

Black Keys (United Center, 1901 W. Madison St.)
March 19 at 7:30pm, tickets $39-59
If there’s one thing you need to know about the Black Keys, it’s that their sound can hardly be defined by one musical genre. Their effortless style encompasses everything from blues rock, to garage rock, to alternative, to indie… and then some. That’s probably why the band garnered five nominations and three wins at the 2011 Grammy Awards. Their most recent album, “El Camino,” turns up the tempo from their award-winning album “Brothers,”—and fans love it! In fact, when the Black Keys announced their North American tour, tickets for the Madison Square Garden show sold out in just 15 minutes.

Indie Horror Film Fest (Portage Theater, 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave.)
March 23-25 (times vary), tickets $10-35
Now in its third year, the Indie Horror Film Fest presents viewers an array of over 25 frightening movie selections. Just a cab ride away from Lakeshore East, Portage Theater is a 1920s-era art deco venue, known for showing classic films. If an all-day Scream marathon sounds up your alley, you’ll love checking out this year’s pictures including titles such as Plastic, Not Another B Movie, and Mad Man. Don’t worry if scary movies give you the heebie-jeebies; host Chris May will be providing comedic relief between film showings. Beyond featuring horror movies, the film fest also showcases a number of special guests from the world of horror films, including Director Willy Adkins and gothic illusionist Ron Fitzgerald.

Chicago Beer Festival (Union Station, 210 S. Canal St.)
March 31 from 1-4pm or 6-9pm, tickets $40
Beer lovers unite in this inaugural festival dedicated to some of the best brews worldwide. Vendors from 50 different beer companies will provide thirsty patrons with samples of nearly 200 beers. Expect to see some of your domestic and international favorites including Abita, Newcastle, Sierra Nevada, Stella Artois, Leffe, and more. Ticket price includes beer tastings, and for attendees looking for something to soak up the suds, food will be available as well.

Mention “improvisational comedy” in Chicago, and you’re bound to receive an array of responses as to which of the Windy City’s many famous improv troupes is the funniest. That said, Chicagoans have good reason to be so passionate about their favorite local comedy clubs. The city has been home to some of the best comedians of our day including John Belushi, Tina Fey, Steve Carrell, Mike Myers, and Stephen Colbert to name a few.

Craving a night of laughs and can’t decide on a destination? Let’s take a look at some of Chicago’s best comedy venues located near the condos at Lakeshore East and see what’s happening in the upcoming weeks.

The ComedySportz Theater (929 W. Belmont Ave.)
No, ComedySportz isn’t exactly an “athletics” venue per se. But rest assured, sports fans, that the competitive spirit is as high at this North Side comedy staple as it is when the Bulls play at the United Center. For reference, think of the long-running improv TV show “Whose Line is it Anyway?” except the points DO matter. Just ask the referees that officiate the game – they have been known to give out penalties like “The Groaner Foul” for a bad pun and “The Brown Bag Foul” for bad language.

This month….
ComedySportz – Fridays (8pm, 10pm), Saturdays (6pm, 8pm, 10pm)
ComedySportz’s long-running signature improv show. Watch Team Blue take on Team Red in an improv battle of hilarious proportions.

Notable alumni: Frank Caeti (“MADtv”), Jeff Davis (“Whose Line is it Anyway?”), Dan Harmon (“Community”)

iO Theater (3541 N. Clark St.)
When visiting iO Theater, located just south of Wrigley Field in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood, audience members are typically treated to a “Harold” performance. A “Harold” begins with an audience suggestion, and the iO Theater cast members take the reigns from there. Scenes might include a game where cast members pretend to be inanimate objects, rotating monologues featuring eccentric characters, or any number of other outlandish sketches that keep the crowd roaring.

This month…
The Harold – Fridays (8pm, 10:30pm), Saturdays (10:30pm)
Each performance of iO’s famous “Harold” show features 2-3 improv groups who specialize in weaving together wild characters, genres, and plots in completely unexpected ways. Arrive prepared to volunteer; “Harolds” have a reputation for inserting audience participation into sketches.
Newspeak – Saturdays (8pm)
Whirled News Tonight presents a satirical twist on worldly events in this feature show. Cast members improvise based on audience suggestions of current news stories from around the world.

Notable alumni: Vince Vaughn (“Wedding Crashers”, “Dodgeball”), Mo Collins (“MADtv”), Tim Meadows (“SNL”)

Second City (1616 N. Wells St.)
The New York Times has called Second City “a comedy empire,” and for good reason. Second City boasts locations in Toronto and Hollywood, but its home and namesake are both Chicago to the core, with its famous Windy City theater just north of Lakeshore East in the Gold Coast neighborhood. In contrast to other theater styles, Second City’s first two acts are semi-scripted, followed by an improvised third act. Shows feature everything from songs, to skits, to completely off-the-wall story-lines. With shows seven nights a week and a rotating cycle of featured performances, laugh-seekers of all types will find something to tickle their fancy at Second City.

This month…
Sex, Love, and The Second City: A Romantic Dot Comedy – Saturdays (2:30pm), Sundays (4:30pm)
Online dating has revolutionized relationships from iPads to iDo’s. Following multiple stories originating from a fictional online dating site, this entertaining show explores love in the digital age… for better or for worse.
The Second City’s History of Chicago – Sundays (1pm), Tuesdays (7:30pm)
You’ve never seen it presented like this! Rounding up 50 years of Second City’s best Chicago-centric acts, this show makes fun of everything you love (to hate) about Chicago.

Notable alumni: Bonnie Hunt (“Cheaper by the Dozen,” “The Bonnie Hunt Show”), Jane Lynch (“Glee,” “The 40-year-old Virgin”), Stephnie Weir (“MADtv”)
